Guardian Angel (part two)
Learning resource
Outcomes
Write a news article based on the events of the narrative. (You will also need part one of Guardian Angel, found in the February 2020 issue of Touchdown.)
After reading Guardian Angel, discuss with students what might happen after the characters get home. Imagine the event made the local news. Explain to the students that they’ll be writing a news article covering the story. An overview of Writing a newspaper article can be found at the Scholastic Website. Examples for students can be found on the Kids News Website. Discuss features such as the headline, the opening paragraph and the conclusion.
Brainstorm what angle the students want to write their news article from. Will it be about the parents at home worrying? How a large storm caused chaos? The bravery of the children? The potential folly of relying on Guardian Angels? Once students have chosen their angle, they can create a relevant headline.
Examples:
Biggest Storm of the Year Causes Trouble for Four Children
Parents’ Plea for More Reliable Guardian Angels
Brave Children Endure Terrifying Ordeal
Students need to work out the who, what, where, why, when and how. They can use a table similar to the one shown below to plan their article.
Who | Luke, Cathy, Jesse, Sakura |
What | While bushwalking, four children had to face dangerous obstacles and shelter in an abandoned hut |
Where | Goanna Lookout |
Why | They were caught in a storm |
How | Guardian Angel app stopped working |
When | Last night (students will have to pretend they are writing the article for the next day) |
